Although Barbie has been around since the 1950s, it was not until 1981 that Mattel produced the first generically-named 'Oriental' Barbie. This was the start of a long line of East Asian Barbies to be made and marketed by Mattel. In 1985, the 1st Japanese Barbie was issued, followed by the Korean Barbie in 1988, then the Malaysian, Singaporean and Filipina Barbies in 1991, and also the Chinese / China Barbie in 1993. In 1997, to mark the British handover of Hong Kong, the Chinese Empress Barbie was issued, followed by the Golden Qipao Barbie in 1998, to mark the 1st anniversary of the handover.
